OpenAI Brings ChatGPT Into Excel and Google Sheets

07 Jul 2026

OpenAI has taken ChatGPT out of the chat window and put it directly inside the spreadsheet. As of May 5, 2026, ChatGPT for Excel and ChatGPT for Google Sheets are generally available across all plans, powered by GPT-5.5 — capping a two-month rollout that moved quickly from beta to broad release.

What's new

The feature lets users build, update, and understand spreadsheet work without ever leaving Excel or Google Sheets. Instead of copying data into a chat window, users type requests in plain language and review the results through a sidebar interface embedded directly in the sheet. OpenAI describes the tool as an in-product collaborator for spreadsheet mechanics and first-pass analysis — handling the repetitive mechanics of formulas, formatting, and data manipulation so users can focus on judgment calls.

To use it, teams need to enable the ChatGPT plugin within the Excel or Google Sheets application itself.

The rollout timeline

  • March 5, 2026: ChatGPT for Excel launched in beta, initially available globally to ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, Teachers, and K-12 users, plus Pro and Plus users outside the EU.
  • April 22, 2026: ChatGPT for Google Sheets entered beta, and OpenAI added support for app integrations and skills to both Excel and Sheets versions.
  • May 5, 2026: Both products reached general availability across all plans, running on GPT-5.5.

Notably, Excel rolled out to enterprise and education tiers well before Pro and Plus subscribers inside the EU gained access — a restriction OpenAI has not explained.

Financial data now built in

Alongside the spreadsheet launch, OpenAI added direct financial data integrations inside ChatGPT, pulling in sources including Moody's, Dow Jones Factiva, MSCI, Third Bridge, and MT Newswires, with FactSet, LSEG, Daloopa, and S&P Global also part of the broader integration set (FactSet is listed as coming soon). For finance teams doing research or due diligence, this means market and company data can be pulled into an analysis without switching tools.

Amr Ellabban, PhD, Head of AI at Hg, credited the broader ChatGPT toolset with speeding up his firm's workflows: "ChatGPT has materially accelerated our research and due diligence workflows—from financial analysis and market research to legal review and writing internal memos—while improving consistency across teams."

Sources differ on Google Sheets availability

The report notes some inconsistency in the record: one account says ChatGPT for Google Sheets became available in beta on April 22, 2026, while another describes Sheets support as still "coming soon" — leaving it unclear whether Sheets support was fully live alongside Excel by the May 5 general-availability date, or trailing slightly behind.

Why founders should care

For early-stage teams, this rollout is likely to matter in a few concrete ways:

  • Lower overhead on spreadsheet work. If the plain-language interface performs as described, founders and small teams could plausibly cut down time spent on manual formula-building, formatting, and first-pass data analysis — work that often falls to generalist team members rather than specialists.
  • Faster financial research, with caveats. The direct integrations with providers like Moody's and Dow Jones Factiva could streamline due diligence and market research for startups doing fundraising prep, competitive analysis, or M&A work — though pricing and plan-specific limits for these integrations haven't been disclosed, so cost impact is uncertain.
  • Access may lag for EU teams on lower tiers. Startups based in the EU running on Pro or Plus plans should expect a possible delay in accessing the tool relative to Business/Enterprise customers, based on the beta rollout pattern.
  • Review before you trust it. Because the tool is explicitly framed as a first-pass collaborator, founders should treat its outputs as a draft rather than a final answer — errors in spreadsheet mechanics are a stated risk if results aren't checked.

Open questions

Several details remain unclear from the current record: pricing and plan-specific limits for the new financial data integrations, the exact scope of what "first-pass analysis" covers, how integrated financial data is secured or handled from a privacy standpoint, and the relationship between GPT-5.4 (also newly available in ChatGPT, Codex, and the API) and GPT-5.5, which now powers the spreadsheet tools. Founders evaluating the tool for finance or data-heavy workflows may want to watch for clarity on these points before committing critical processes to it.
