Cloudflare Launches Billable Usage API for Cost Visibility
08 Aug 2026
Cloudflare has launched a Billable Usage API for self-serve accounts, live today, giving developers and finance teams programmatic access to account usage and cost data broken down by product and service period.
What's New
The API covers Cloudflare's usage-based products: Workers, R2, D1, Workers AI, Vectorize, Images, and Stream. Usage and cost data are updated daily, and the column naming maps directly to the FinOps Open Cost and Usage Specification (FOCUS), a standard schema used across the FinOps community.
Alongside the API launch, Cloudflare partnered with Vantage — an infrastructure cost management platform that ingests data from more than 30 providers across AI, Cloud, and SaaS — on a native integration. Vantage pulls Cloudflare Billable Usage data daily and breaks it down by product, zone, and account, connecting via a read-only API token scoped to Billing Read access.
How It Works
Developers can query the Billable Usage API directly in scripts using curl commands to monitor spend programmatically. Finance teams can pull Cloudflare spend data into their own systems to attribute cost to internal projects, teams, or customers — a task that previously required manual aggregation.
Because the schema aligns with FOCUS, the data may plug more easily into existing FinOps tooling that startups already use, rather than requiring custom parsing or mapping work.
What's Coming Next
Cloudflare has outlined several planned enhancements, though without specific timelines:
- Finer-grained, more real-time time windows — the current daily granularity may limit usefulness for time-sensitive cost monitoring until this ships.
- Forecasting capabilities at both account and product levels.
- Enterprise coverage — currently, enterprise accounts are not supported, which may limit adoption among larger customers relying on Cloudflare at scale.
Why Founders Should Care
For early-stage teams building on Cloudflare's Workers, R2, D1, or Workers AI, this API likely reduces the friction of tracking infrastructure spend as usage scales. Founders running lean finance operations may find that FOCUS alignment and the Vantage integration reduce the need to build custom cost dashboards from scratch — a meaningful time save for teams without dedicated FinOps staff.
That said, the current daily-only granularity means real-time cost alerting isn't yet possible, so teams with tight margin sensitivity to usage spikes should treat this as a monitoring aid rather than a real-time guardrail for now. Startups anticipating a move to Cloudflare enterprise plans should also verify the enterprise coverage roadmap before assuming this API will support that transition seamlessly.
Open Questions
The report does not specify pricing or rate limits for the Billable Usage API, nor how the Vantage integration is priced or activated for customers. No timeline has been given for the finer-grained windows, forecasting, or enterprise coverage — details founders evaluating this for production cost management will want to watch for as Cloudflare iterates.
