Amazon Makes Alexa+ Free for All Fire TV Devices
31 Aug 2026
Amazon is removing the price tag from its AI assistant on Fire TV. Starting today, Alexa+ is rolling out for free to all compatible Fire TV devices in the U.S. — no Prime subscription, app download, or sign-up required.
What's changing
Until now, Alexa+ was gated behind a Prime membership or a standalone Alexa+ subscription, which cost non-Prime users $19.99/month. Alexa+ first arrived on new Fire TV devices last fall; today's update extends it, free, to the full compatible lineup — current-generation Fire TV Sticks, Fire TV Cube, Amazon's Ember smart TVs, and Alexa+-enabled TVs from Hisense and Panasonic.
Customers won't need to do anything to get it. Amazon says all eligible users will be automatically upgraded to Alexa+ on their existing devices.
What Alexa+ actually does
Alexa+ goes beyond basic voice commands with conversational search, AI-powered recommendations, and smart home control. On Fire TV specifically, it can:
- Give mood-based movie and show recommendations
- Jump to specific scenes within content
- Answer questions about what's on screen
- Control smart home devices like lighting, door locks, and camera feeds
Amazon says Alexa+ users on Fire TV are having nearly twice as many conversations with the assistant compared to the original Alexa — though the company hasn't detailed how that figure was measured.
Amazon also notes that additional devices and regions may be added over time, though no timeline was given.
The competitive backdrop
This move lands amid an AI arms race among smart TV platforms. Google rolled out its Gemini assistant to Google TV earlier this year with its own conversational search features, and Roku upgraded its voice assistant to AI-driven capabilities last year. Making Alexa+ free removes a friction point Amazon's rivals don't have to contend with — for now.
Why founders should care
- A larger, free-tier install base could mean more accessible engagement data. If Alexa+ usage scales quickly now that the paywall is gone, startups building voice-AI or smart-home integrations may find a bigger, more active audience to design for — though how quickly that materializes is untested.
- Amazon's move likely signals a strategic pivot toward ecosystem lock-in over direct monetization. Founders weighing similar bundling-vs-charging decisions for AI features may want to watch how this plays out for Amazon's engagement and retention numbers.
- Automatic, opt-out-free upgrades could become a more common rollout pattern for AI features. Startups relying on manual onboarding flows may increasingly compete against platforms that simply flip a switch for all users — a dynamic worth factoring into product and growth planning.
- Intensifying competition between Amazon, Google, and Roku on AI assistants suggests the bar for "basic" AI features in consumer hardware is rising fast, which could shape what users expect from any AI-driven product, not just smart TVs.
What's still unclear
Amazon hasn't specified the exact date the rollout began beyond "today," which Fire TV Stick generations count as "current-generation," or whether any Alexa+ features remain locked behind Prime or a paid tier. It's also unclear how the "twice as many conversations" engagement claim was calculated, or what criteria will determine which devices and regions get added next.
Bottom line: Amazon is betting that free, frictionless access to Alexa+ will drive deeper engagement across its Fire TV ecosystem, even at the cost of subscription revenue — a trade-off increasingly common as AI assistants become table stakes across smart TV platforms.
