Alexa Plus Gets AI Update for Complex Commands

24 Jul 2026

Amazon is pushing a new update to Alexa Plus, its revamped AI assistant that launched widely in February. The update, currently in preview, expands what the assistant can do around the smart home and across a growing list of third-party services.

What's changing

The headline feature is Alexa Plus's expanded ability to handle multi-step requests and help users build voice-driven routines — a step up from simpler single-command interactions. Amazon says the assistant will also connect to smart home devices in new ways, with support for hardware from Bosch, Delta, Ecovacs, iRobot, Yale Home, Whirlpool, Tapo, and Eufy.

Underpinning this expansion is Amazon's adoption of the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open-source standard that lets AI models plug into external systems and tools. MCP has been gaining traction industry-wide as a common language for connecting AI assistants to third-party software, and Amazon's move signals Alexa Plus is aligning with that broader ecosystem rather than building bespoke integrations one by one.

Expanding third-party reach

Alexa Plus already performs tasks through services like Ticketmaster, OpenTable, Uber, Thumbtack, Expedia, Yelp, Square, and Angi. Later this year, that list grows further with integrations from Canva, Headspace, Priceline, Lyft, Cengage, Virgin Atlantic, and Weekend.

Priceline's integration stands out: customers will be able to browse hotel options and book a trip directly through Alexa Plus. Meanwhile, Amazon is also extending payment support — Priceline, Atom Tickets, Cengage, Fandango, and Taskrabbit will soon accept payments through Amazon Wallet directly inside the assistant.

Why founders should care

For early-stage teams building on top of AI assistants or smart home ecosystems, this update is worth watching closely:

  • Amazon's adoption of MCP likely signals that third-party integration is becoming easier and more standardized, which could lower the barrier for startups to plug their own products into Alexa Plus.
  • The expanding roster of launch partners (Canva, Headspace, Lyft, Virgin Atlantic, and others) suggests Amazon may be actively courting consumer and productivity apps for integration — a potential distribution channel for founders in adjacent categories.
  • Built-in payment support through Amazon Wallet could point toward Alexa Plus becoming a more direct commerce layer, which may matter for founders in travel, ticketing, or on-demand services.
  • The move to multi-step task handling may indicate faster shipping cycles for teams adopting these new tools, though this remains an early signal rather than a confirmed trend.

What we don't know yet

This report is based on a single source, so some details — such as exact rollout timing beyond "later this year" and the technical scope of the MCP integration — await corroboration. Founders considering building toward Alexa Plus should treat this as an early, developing story rather than a finalized platform commitment.
